It is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week from November 1-7. This Saturday, November 1, Cobourg Firefighters will be at Cobourg Home Depot (1050 Depalma Drive) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to answer your questions about carbon monoxide and explain the new laws coming into effect on January 1, 2026
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odourless, and deadly gas. New requirements are coming to help keep households safe!
IMPORTANT SAFETY ALERT for Homeowners & Landlords!
Effective January 1, 2026, new CO alarm requirements apply to homes that have:
A fuel-burning appliance (furnace, gas stove, etc.)
A fireplace
An attached garage
(New) Heated air that comes from a fuel-burning appliance outside the home (e.g., an appliance in a utility shed).
What’s New?
The new Fire Code requirements coming into effect on January 1, 2026, will expand CO alarm installation in:
• Existing Homes: Alarms will now be required on every storey, not just near sleeping areas.
• Multi-Unit Residential Buildings: CO alarms must be installed in all suites meeting certain conditions, service rooms, and, in some cases, public corridors.
• Care Occupancies: This includes residential care facilities and certain group homes, where CO alarms will be required in suites and common areas. These changes are designed to better protect vulnerable populations and ensure CO alarms are placed where risks are highest.
