Event Details:

The Town of Cobourg invites all community members to participate in a litter cleanup and Butt Blitz on Sunday, April 21, to kick off the Mayors’ ‘Keep the County Clean’ challenge which will run from April 22-28.

This year, Mayor Cleveland will be kicking off the challenge early on Sunday, April 21, partnering withA Greener Future and Sustainable Cobourg.

A Greener Future will be focusing its efforts on picking up cigarette butts through conducing a “Butt Blitz” at Cobourg’s beautiful waterfront on Sunday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the Cobourg Marina (103 Third Street) and will be provided with supplies and equipment.

Sustainable Cobourg will be focusing its cleanup efforts in Peace Park (175 Forth Street), and invites anyone interested to join them on Sunday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Mayors’ ‘Keep the County Clean’ is an annual Northumberland County event, during the week of Earth Day, that encourages community members to choose an area of town to clean and help collect litter for pickup. Local groups and individuals volunteer to clean up public areas (parks, roadsides, etc.).

Participants are asked to register online at Cobourg.ca/cleanup and select the location you would like to collect in. Full bags of litter may be left along the roadside of your clean-up area for Town staff to collect. Please remember that large, hazardous, or dangerous items are not to be touched. If a dangerous item is found, please report back to the Town, and qualified staff will come to collect. Afterwards, log back onto the webpage to report where you left your garbage bags for pickup.

Supplies, including gloves, pickers, and garbage bags will be available to pick up from the Town’s Public Works Building 7 (740 Division Street, in the Northam Industrial Park), from Monday, April 22 to Thursday, April 25, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A Greener Future
Each spring, volunteers from across Canada pick up cigarette butts in their local communities, then send them to TerraCycle Canada for recycling. The TerraCycle program recycles these otherwise unrecyclable products into usable items. Due to the nature of the material collected, this clean-up event is recommended for ages 19+.

Sustainable Cobourg
Sustainable Cobourg’s goal is to educate and increase the public’s understanding of Climate Change, its impact and the importance of changing attitudes and practices that contribute to the emissions of Greenhouse Gases. By organizing and participating in local projects Sustainable Cobourg endeavours to put into practice the principles of sustainability.

The Town of Cobourg thanks all community members in advance who volunteer to help clean up our beautiful town.
